Photos from Sanur (and the Taipei airport)
A sampling of photos from the first few days of our trip. More photos (and videos?!?!) coming soon! You can check out Offerings and Outriggers for a more detailed description of our impressions of Sanur and Padang Bai, the first two towns we have visited on our month-long trip to Indonesia. Now, on to the start of our trip to Bali!
Taipei Airport (en route to Bali)
The national Taiwanese airline, EVA Air, sometimes themes their planes with Hello KittyAnd I mean really themes them!
Sanur
Our first hotel had a lovely combination of pool and tropical gardensThe tropical gardens from a few floors up (plus some cool architecture)There was a really impressive, giant statue of a garuda (the half-bird, half-man mount of Lord Vishnu) near the lobbyAbout to enjoy lunch at a nearby beachMy lunch — nasi goreng (fried rice), a very popular traditional Indonesian dish. And those odd pink things are “prawn crackers” in a little bowl made of banana leaves. Neat! The beach! One of myriad colorful outrigger boats on the beach (most of which seemed to have this exact same marlin face)An amusing little frog statue (and also lantern, it turns out)…motorbikes! (they’re all over the place in Indonesia, quite literally)A small, simple example of the many Hindu temples we’ve encountered. As you can kind of tell here, they’re often more like little courtyards than what you’d normally think of when you hear the word “temple.” This one was nestled inconspicuously among all of the small, family-run shops lining the beachThere was coral all over the beach. Here’s a strange piece I found with… baby seaweed growing on it?🙂A small boat and a very large volcano (Mt. Agung)Another temple. This one’s tiny! And also nicely demonstrates the poleng (black and white plaid) fabric pattern that shows up in many places hereThere were quite a few more trees than I might have expected this close to the ocean!
